A
Tutorial
by
Dr. S. H. Durrani
VP-Education, IEEE- AESS, USA
Satellite Communications is a thriving industry, and many global,
regional and domestic systems are currently providing satcom
services throughout the world. The tutorial gives an overview
of the subject at an introductory level, for engineers and
scientists who are not specialists in this field. It briefly
traces the development of commercial satcom systems over
the last 40 years, and describes some of the existing and proposed
systems to serve fixed and mobile users, how they interact
with terrestrial systems, and the basic technologies involved.
The main technical topics include spacecraft subsystems,
launch vehicles, geostationary and low or medium altitude earth orbits
(GEO, LEO, and MEO), and basic communications techniques.
It concludes with a discussion of the market and regulatory issues
involved, and major trends and potential capabilities in
the near future.
